Hello From Decant,
this week ....
Bordeaux, perhaps France's most famous wine region, offers some great drinking at very reasonable prices.
If Cabernet / Merlot blends are your thing, then this one's for you.
CHATEAU
LAUBES
BORDEAUX
2016
$26.
Chateau Laubes is located in the tiny commune of Escoussans, near Cadillac, on the right bank of the Garonne. The Chateau takes its name from the first feudal lords who lived there in the 12th Century.
Producing tiny quantities and offering real value for money, this classic blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon has got the lot - spice, toasty wood and tannic structure..
CHATEAU
PASCAUD
BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR
2020
$30.
The secret here is location. The wines are labelled Bordeaux Supérieur, but the grapes are grown close to, and in some cases, over the border into better known Fronsac. The clay and limestone slopes and microclimatic influences are very similar to the terroir found in nearby Saint Emilion. Not surprisingly, Merlot works very well here.
90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Limestone and clay soil 35+ year old vines De-stemmed Aged in 65% tank, 35% barrels for 18 months all from the village of Galgon in the district of Fronsac
LE VIEUX FORT
MEDOC
CRU BOURGEOIS
2019
$31.
Château Le Vieux Fort is ideally located at the tip of the Médoc in the district of Valeyrac, near the Gironde estuary and Atlantic Ocean. Since 1925, the Bergey family has guided the history of the estate, which today is headed up by the 4th generation.
"....this wine reveals aromas of macerated fruits with a hint of mint, lifted by roasted notes. Generous and rich on the palate, with relatively firm tannins that will soften over time. A highly characterful, top value Cru Bourgeois!"
Wine Enthusiast 90pts
55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc
CHATEAU
HAUT-MAYNE
GRAVES
2019
$35.
Chateau Haut Mayne consists of 18 hectares of vineyards which are located 35kms to the south of Bordeaux at Cerons in the heart of the Graves region around Mayne d’Anis. These were bought by Michel Boyer in 1972. The vineyards here are characterised by the typical gravelly soils of Graves with large pebbles with sandy / limestone subsoil.
"The nose has notes of dark fruit, damp grass, mushroom and crushed stones. The palate continues the trend but adds mellow tannins; structure is necessary for long lived Bordeaux. The finish is slightly herbaceous with notes of toasted cedar. This is a really great glimpse of Graves for a price we can all enjoy."
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
CHATEAU
TOUR DE BOSSUET
LALANDE-DE-POMEROL
2021
$36.
Over to the right bank and the Merlot dominated region of Lalande de Pomerol
The Merlot that dominates the blend gives this wine a deep ruby color, round a fruity flavour and a silky texture. You will find on the nose aromas of black fruit, spice and vanilla. On the palate, flavors of cherry, blackberry and chocolate will come out. The perfect wine to keep a few years in the cellar!
90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc
CHATEAU
RIGAUD
PUISSEGUIN-SAINT EMILION
2020
$38.
Chateau Rigaud is located at the extreme southwest of the Puisseguin Saint-Emilion appellation, very close to the communes of Montagne and Saint-Emilion. The soils are clayey and the subsoil is composed of limestone. Chateau Rigaud belongs to Pierre Taix, also owner of Chateau Fongaban.
"Aromas of currants, tobacco and herbs follow through to a medium to full body. Firm, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Polished and refined."
