Altos las Hormigas is a specialist Malbec producer and rated as one of the top five in Argentina. They spearheaded the revival of Malbec in Argentina in the 1990s, while many others were insistent on planting and vinifying Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Alberto Antonini and fellow Tuscan friend and business partner, Antonio Morescalchi first visited the vineyards in 1995 and were so impressed that they persuaded a few friends to join with them in buying this estate. The grapes come from vineyards in Medrano, Barrancas and Lulunta in Mendoza, situated at 900 -1,000m above sea level. The sites are chosen for their deep, fresh sandy loam soils that delay ripening and avoid hydric stress. The climate here is semi-desert with hot days and cool nights which help the aromatic development of the grapes. "Bright medium red. Slightly reduced aromas of blackberry, strawberry, mocha and smoked meat, plus a hint of violet. Supple, soft and sweet, with a continuing note of reduction but also good intensity to its flavors of black fruits and licorice. A strong vintage for this entry-level bottling. Finishes with smooth tannins and hints of chocolate and licorice." Stephen Tanzer
