Cuvée du Vatican is made by Jean-Marc Diffonty of Château Sixtine, who is known for making some of the finest Châteauneufs in the region. This is his ‘entry-level’ Châteauneuf and as such, represents excellent value for money.
- The Diffonty family can trace their wine-growing history back to 1673. They owned just two hectares of vines at the start of the 20th century but steadily built up their holdings and in 1958 launched the Cuvée du Vatican label with the blessing of the Pope!
- The 2016 was awarded a gold medal at the Concours des Vins d’Orange and 17/20 on jancisrobinson.com
- 2016 was one of the Southern Rhône’s best ever vintages and is definitely a year not to miss
Tasting note:Deep purple crimson in the glass. The nose is dominated by blackberry jam, cherries and tobacco with delicate herbal notes and light woodsmoke. Generous mouth-filling black fruits on the palate with hints of liquorice, toasted spices and smooth tannins.
